Channel Island club clinch Championship spot

Jersey are celebrating promotion to the second tier of English rugby for the first time in their history. The Channel Islanders secured their place in the RFU Championship for next season after clinching the National One title with a game to go. Jersey, where England winger Matt Banahan began his playing career before moving to Bath, toppled Coventry 37-13 in their penultimate game to ensure second-placed Ealing Trailfinders could no longer catch them. Michael Le Bourgeois (197pts) and Ross Broadfoot (166pts) have provided the majority of the points for the champions this season - with former England Sevens and Gloucester winger Guy Thompson crossing for 17 tries. Jersey also boast former Sale, Ospreys and Edinburgh centre David Bishop and ex Wales prop Ben Evans among their ranks. Jersey replace Esher in the Championship after the Surrey club finished bottom of their relegation pool - with last season's National One champions London Scottish beating them in the final match.
