Tony McGahan was named as the new head coach of the Melbourne Rebels on Monday, replacing Damien Hill.

The former Munster director of rugby, who was most recently part of the Wallabies' unsuccessful campaign against the British and Irish Lions, will take over from Hill next month on a two-year contract.

Having been asked to re-apply for his job partway through this season, his second as Rebels coach, Hill guided the team to just four wins in the Super 15 this season with only Friday's game against the Highlanders remaining and as such was unsuccessful.

According to Rebels chief Rob Clarke, McGahan fought off competition from 16 other applicants to land the job in Melbourne with his achievements at international level added to success at the top level in England and Australia a major factor in his appointment.

Record of success

"Tony comes to Melbourne highly regarded as an international coach with a record of success at the top level," said Clarke.

McGahan left Australia in 2005 for Japan. Following a positive stint there he moved to Munster where, firstly, as defence coach and then director of rugby he led the Irish side to two Heineken Cup victories and two Celtic League titles.

He also coached Munster to their historic 15-6 win over the touring Wallabies in 2010 before being appointed as Australia's coaching coordinator last year.

McGahan's arrival is just the latest of a number of major changes being undertaken by the Rebels with the club announcing that James O'Connor, the Wallabies fly-half during the Lions series, will not be awarded a new contract.
