Russia second row cleared due to insufficient evidence

Rebels lock Adam Byrnes is free to play again after having his 10-week ban overturned. The Russia international had been found guilty by SANZAR judicial officer Paul Tully of making contact with the eye or eye area of Waratahs centre Tom Carter on March 2. The incident had originally been flagged up by Waratahs captain Daniel Halangahu during the match, with medical evidence showing Carter had sustained a minor scratch to his eye. However a three-man appeals committee - chaired by Nicholas Davidson - has ruled that there was insufficient evidence to ban Byrnes. A statement from SANZAR read: "Applying the standard of proof required under the rules, the appeal committee concluded that it could not be said that a breach of the laws occurred to the requisite standard as an act of recklessness which involved contact with the eye area. "In the circumstances, the appeal was allowed and the sanction was set aside."
