Newport Gwent Dragons have signed South African scrum-half Sarel Pretorius.

The 30-year-old, who has played for Super Rugby franchises Cheetahs and Waratah during his career in the southern hemisphere, will join the Welsh club at the start of next season.

Lyn Jones, director of rugby at the Dragons, said: "We are delighted that Sarel has made the move to the Dragons.

“He is a very experienced player and it’s that wealth of experience and ability that we need among our young squad. Sarel is an exciting signing for us and is a great fit."

Pretorius made his Super Rugby debut for the Free State Cheetahs in 2009, before moving to Australia three years later to play for the Waratahs.

He said: “The Dragons have a great group of players along with fantastic facilities and coaches, so I am looking forward to joining up with the squad.

“I feel that it is an exciting time to be involved and I am looking forward to seeing where we can go as a club,” added Pretorius, who played three times for the Emerging Springboks in 2008.
