Dan Carter's return from injury has suffered a minor setback after the fly-half was ruled out for Canterbury due to a bruised calf.

The New Zealand international picked up the problem while playing 40 minutes against Southland last week and has not been risked for Saturday's ITM Cup clash with Tasman in Christchurch.

"He bruised his calf in last Sunday's match against Southland and although he has been recovering well, was ruled out of contention at today's captain's run," Canterbury said in the statement released naming their line-up.

The 32-year-old had planned to use provincial rugby to gain match fitness ahead of the All Blacks' third Bledisloe Cup clash with Australia on October 18 after breaking his leg in the Super Rugby final.

Carter only appeared for the Crusaders in the final rew rounds of the season having been given a six-month sabbatical by the New Zealand Rugby Union to rest and recover from niggling injuries ahead of next year's World Cup.

The All Blacks have already clinched their third successive Rugby Championship title - they face South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday, a match you can see LIVE on Sky Sports.

Aaron Cruden misses the match against the Springboks at Ellis Park in Joahnnesburg due to serving a two-match suspension for missing a team flight to Argentina in September.

However, the NZRU have confirmed that the fly-half will serve no further punishment, meaning he will be considered for selection for the clash with the Wallabies at Suncorp Stadium later this month.
