Borthwick doubtful for England

Steve Borthwick could miss England's summer tour of Australia because of a knee injury.

Bath skipper Steve Borthwick admits his place in England's squad to tour Australia this summer is in doubt because of a knee injury.

Borthwick was forced to sit out his side's 25-22 victory over Worcester on Saturday and has undergone minor surgery to correct the problem.

"I couldn't keep playing on it but now any involvement in the tour is fully dependent on the knee being in top condition," he said.

"The prediction given by the surgeon was that it would be borderline. I'm doing everything I can to get the rehab right.

"I want to go on the England tour but the worst possible thing would be for problems to recur and also compromise my pre-season. It's up to me - I'm the one who knows my body best but no one from England has spoken to me yet."

Borthwick has still to sign a new contract at the Recreation Ground and added: "I want to play for Bath next season but nothing has been signed yet."

A bigger question mark still hangs over the future of head coach Brian Ashton, widely touted as the man to revolutionise England's attacking play, but when asked if he has been approached he insisted: "I've heard nothing."

On the final performance of the season Ashton said: "It was nice to finish with a bonus. There was some fantastic rugby, some entertaining rugby and some absolutely crazy rugby - from both sides."
