Lock Alex Brown could miss out on an England debut next month after sustaining a disc problem in his neck.
The Gloucester forward will miss Saturday's European Challenge Cup clash with Bayonne and a clearer idea of where he is at will be known in a week's time.
"Alex has a disc problem and he will spend the next seven days being assessed. Hopefully, after that time, we will get some positive news," said Gloucester head coach Dean Ryan.
Brown is a contender for a starting place against Australia - the first of three November internationals - but his chances suffered a setback when Danny Grewcock outshone him in Bath's win over the Cherry and Whites last week.
The 6ft 6in lock added: "It is disappointing that the injury has happened at this stage but I will work hard with the medical team over the next week and aim to resume playing as soon as possible."
