Wales head coach Warren Gatland will pick star centre Jamie Roberts despite his expected move to Aviva Premiership club Harlequins.

The 28-year-old, who is leaving Racing Metro at the end of the current season, reportedly rejected a move back to Welsh region Cardiff Blues and will instead move to The Stoop.

The decision would, in theory, fall foul of 'Gatland's Law' - the selection of home-based players above those plying their trades abroad - but the New Zealander has moved to reassure the British & Irish Lion over selection.

Gatland told BBC Wales Sport on Thursday: "There's not a hard and fast rule as there is with England.

There are exceptions where players who have been playing outside of Wales and there are one or two wildcards we could pick.

"There are exceptions where players who have been playing outside of Wales and there are one or two wildcards we could pick.

"They do play outside of Wales but they could be selected, but I think the long-term goal is to have a policy where, ideally, we pick players who are playing in Wales."

While Gatland seems keen to remain pragmatic he admitted frustration at the actions of No 8 Toby Faletau, who missed a deadline for signing a national dual contract and is likely to join Bath over the summer.

"It was disappointing he didn't sign a national dual contract," Gatland told WalesOnline.

"It put me in a bit of a difficult situation when players and agents have been told a deadline. To go back on that when others have signed would not have been fair, we couldn't make an exception."
