New deals for Northampton duo

Paul Diggin and Alex Rae have signed contract extensions at Franklin's Gardens.

Northampton Saints have secured yet another signature for next season after Paul Diggin agreed a one-year extension with the club.

The 22-year-old has shown great promise this season, scoring four tries in the Heineken Cup.

Initially a winger in his early years, Diggin has adapted to the full-back role due to the competition for places provided by the likes of Sean Lamont, Ben Cohen and Robbie Kydd, and coach Paul Grayson was delighted to keep his man.

"Paul's contract extension is great for him and for us," said Grayson. "It's a reflection of the hard work he's put in through the season.

"He's grown up a lot over the past couple of years and this is reflected in his performances on the pitch."

Saints face the possibility of relegation from the Guinness Premiership if they lose to London Irish this weekend, but Diggin did not let that deter him from signing a new deal.

"I'm really pleased to be staying at my home-town club," he said. "I grew up watching the Saints and feel very much at home at Franklin's Gardens.

"We've got a great squad with some great players and I'm looking forward to another year in the Premiership."

Academy graduate Alex Rae has also committed his future to the club, signing a two-year full-time contract.

Rae is a highly-rated back-row forward, and Grayson believes the 21-year-old does have a good future despite his relatively late emergence as a first team player.

"That Alex has remained in the Academy during these past two seasons is no reflection on his ability.

"He has impressed me whenever he's been given a chance in the first team. It's just that some people are late developers in a physical sense and Alex is one of those."
