King Carlos' reign not over

Paul Grayson insists Barry Everitt's arrival will not spell the end for Carlos Spencer.

Northampton Saints boss Paul Grayson has moved to quash rumours that Barry Everitt's arrival spells the end of Carlos Spencer's Saints career.

Specialist fly-half Everitt will arrive at Franklin's Gardens at the end of the season, throwing up question marks over the future of current number 10 Spencer.

The former All Black's ability with a dead ball cannot match up to Everitt, who has scored 1316 points during his Irish career.

However, Grayson was keen to point out Spencer's versatility in a number of positions, and he expects the Kiwi veteran to see out the last year of his contract.

"We are fortunate to have such a player like Carlos in our squad who mirrors the commitment shown by all our senior and international players despite our current league position," said Grayson.

"We have signed Barry Everitt for next season to bring a renowned kicker into the mix.

"But I believe there is room for both Barry and Carlos on the field with the latter comfortable at outside-centre and full-back, positions where he can put his pace and skills to good use.

"All clubs will be hoping to strengthen the depth of their squads ahead of the Rugby World Cup during which we will almost certainly lose Sean Lamont, and possibly Robbie Kydd and Ben Cohen too, which may lead to us utilising Bruce Reihana on the wing.

"Carlos has said he is happy to play anywhere in the backline for the sake of this club which will give us flexibility and strength in pivotal positions, also giving Stephen Myler two ideal role models from which he can learn his trade.

"The competition for places will also be healthy, which benefits everyone."

Whether Spencer and Saints are plying their trade in the Premiership next season remains to be seen though, as they currently sit just three points above bottom club Worcester Warriors.
