Six Nations: George North working hard on game ahead of England clash

Wales winger George North is determined to work on his game when he doesn't have the ball ahead of the Six Nations.

North has developed into one of the game's most feared power wings over the last couple of years but he is keen not to let his game stagnate and is looking to add another string to his bow.

He admits his play off the ball still needs some work and is keen to ensure he is even more effective by the time they kick off their Six Nations campaign against England on February 6.

Dummy runs

"One massive thing I think I've realised now is that yes, sometimes I can be very effective with ball in hand, but I can be just as effective without the ball," North said.

"So it's not necessarily all about being the ball-carrier, it's just as much about being the dummy runner off that at different points.

"That can open massive holes for other people.

"That's another string to my bow.

"Everyone wants ball in hand, but sometimes you've got to think to yourself, actually for the team it's better to get other runners on the ball and use me as a dummy runner.

"Sometimes those games come, but it's just knowing when I'm best used as a strike runner or as a dummy runner. And that's something another thing to add to the list of things to work on."

Autumn lessons

North was missing from the Wales side because of concussion when they ended their mixed autumn campaign with a win over South Africa, but he feels their defeats by Australia and New Zealand helped them learn a lot about the international game and lessons have been learned ahead of their return to European competition.

He added: "I think we learned more from this autumn than any other.

"Going close to Australia and New Zealand then getting a scalp on South Africa. We put ourselves under a lot of pressure by doing a lot of conditioning work.

"We pushed ourselves and still performed under massive fatigue. And I think that will stand us in great stead for the World Cup, with games coming thick and fast."
