Moody out of Scotland battle

Lewis Moody has been ruled out of Saturday's Calcutta Cup clash, Tom Rees comes in.

All-action England flanker Lewis has been ruled out of Saturday's RBS Six Nations opener against Scotland.

Moody has a problem with his left shoulder, and England bosses confirmed his absence after an assessment on Thursday.

Wasps back row Tom Rees is drafted onto the bench as Moody's replacement, providing cover for Joe Worsley and Magnus Lund at flanker.

Rees is yet to feature in an England shirt despite making several squads, but his ball-carrying game will give head coach Brian Ashton a different option on the replacements bench.

England's other injury worry Iain Balshaw is still to confirm his availability for the weekend encounter, with a slight groin aggravation the cause for concern.

A final decision will not be made until Friday, with Gloucester's Olly Morgan on standby to come into the matchday 22.

Morgan would provide a straight replacement for Balshaw at full-back, although Ashton may prefer to switch either Jason Robinson or Josh Lewsey to the 15 jersey, with Mathew Tait drafted onto the wing.
