Ireland winger Andrew Trimble will be out for the rest of the season due to a recurrence of the toe injury which has kept him on the sidelines since October.

The 30-year-old was a key member of the Ireland team that won the Six Nations title last year and it was hoped he might recover in time to return towards the end of this year’s Championship.

But Ulster released a statement on Thursday which read: “Andrew Trimble will miss the rest of this season, following confirmation that he has suffered a reoccurrence of the toe injury that he sustained in October against Glasgow Warriors.

“He underwent surgery in London today and is expected to be out of rugby until the summer.

“It is anticipated that he will make a full recovery ahead of pre-season and the Rugby World Cup.”

And an Ulster official told The Irish Times: “This is not a career threatening injury or anything like that.

“Andrew expects to be back in July to get a good pre-season in and hopefully work his way back into the Irish squad.”

Having made his debut in 2005, Trimble has become a mainstay of the Ireland squad and he has 57 caps to his name.

He started all of Ireland’s Six Nations games last season and scored three times as they secured the title.
