Ireland full-back ruled out of World Cup with ligament damage

Ireland full-back Felix Jones has been ruled out of the World Cup after picking up a foot injury in the 26-22 loss to France on Saturday. Jones was driven off the pitch in a medical cart at the Aviva Stadium after falling awkwardly while attempting to catch a high ball. He subsequently underwent an MRI scan which revealed damage to one of the stabilising ligaments in his foot, an injury that will require six weeks of immobilisation. Jones, who was making his full Test debut during the contest, is therefore no longer in contention for Ireland's 30-man World Cup squad, which will be revealed on Monday. The 24-year-old Munster player had forced his way into consideration for the tournament in New Zealand, though his lack of experience may have counted against him. "The squad and management are bitterly disappointed for Felix to suffer an injury at such a vital time in terms of selection for the final touring party," Ireland manager Paul McNaughton said. "He had certainly put himself into contention during pre-season and the games in the last three weeks. We all wish him a speedy recovery and that he is back playing as soon as possible."
