New recruit retires on the eve of new season

The Sharks have been rocked by news that new fly-half recruit Steve Meyer has opted to retire on the eve of the season. Meyer was freed by Perpignan to return the Sharks ahead of the new Super 14 campaign - with the Natal franchise despite for fly-half options following injury to Juan Martin Hernandez. However the 25-year-old, who endured an injury-hit spell in France, has now been released from his contract for "personal reasons". Sharks chief executive Brian van Zyl confirmed: "Whilst this has come at an inopportune time, we respect his decision and have agreed to release him. "It is fortunate that we have a number of players who can fill this position until such time as alternative arrangements can be made." Meyer's exit and the injury to Hernandez means that Monty Dumond will start the season in the No.10 jersey.
