Pietersen and Brits added to the squad to face Wales

South Africa have added winger JP Pietersen and uncapped hooker Schalk Brits to their squad to face Wales on Saturday. Pietersen, who was part of the Springboks' World Cup-winning side in November, and Brits were initially omitted from new coach Peter de Villiers' 30-man squad. However with captain John Smit set to miss the Test against Italy on June 21 because of his club commitments with Clermont in France, Brits has earned a call-up. And Pietersen returns to allow the Boks management team to monitor his fitness and conditioning. Communications manager Chris Hewitt said: "JP and Schalk are both in contention for selection. "We're going to lose John Smit shortly for his French commitments and it makes sense for Brits to get familiar with the lineout calls. "JP was a vital part of our World Cup win and it would be absurd to just abandon him. He knows he is part of our plans, but by his own acknowledgement he was not in the best conditioning in the pre-season. "The decision to keep him with the squad is more to monitor him, to make sure he is keeping to the conditioning programs he has been given and to keep him in the right mindset."
