Munster tighthead BJ Botha has been ruled out for the opening month of the season after suffering a medial ligament tear.

The South Africa international suffered the injury during last weekend's pre-season win over London Irish and could miss Munster's first four games in the RaboDirect Pro 12.

"It's a four-week minimum with this type of injury," said Munster coach Rob Penney.

"We're lucky that we have some good young talent coming through and it's exciting that these younger players will get a chance to show what they're worth."

"We're lucky that we have some good young talent coming through and it's exciting that these younger players will get a chance to show what they're worth."

Munster host Edinburgh in Musgrave Park on Saturday in their Pro 12 opener and Penney has called on Ian Keatley and JJ Hanrahan to stake their claim for the No 10 jersey following Ronan O'Gara's retirement.

Underestimate

Penney admits O'Gara is "irreplaceable" but believes Keatley can step up following some impressive showings last season.

The Kiwi said: "You underestimate how good Ian is; he played in two Heineken Cup matches last year and did a great job.

"JJ has come through the Irish U20s and did exceedingly well in South Africa. Now they've got to step out of the shadows.

"Ronan is irreplaceable but we're not looking to replace him; we're looking to have two new people in the 10 jersey and they've got to put their own stamp and mark on the game now.

"Nobody here is fretting about Ronan moving on because we can't afford to do that. We will just embrace the guys that have stepped into his very large shoes and support them 100% so they can be who they need to be."
