Glasgow Warriors have lost Niko Matawalu for the first few months of the season after the scrum-half broke his right metatarsal.

The Fijian star suffered the injury in pre-season training and has undergone an operation.

Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: "We're naturally disappointed that Niko will miss the start of the season.

"He brings so much to the squad both on and off the pitch and we wish him well in his recovery.

"Along with Henry Pyrgos, who is coming off the back of an excellent season with Glasgow and Scotland, there will be good competition for the number nine jersey this season."
