Agent says Wales and Cardiff star will not join Crusaders next season

Andy Powell's agent has dismissed speculation that the Wales international will switch codes to join Super League club the Crusaders next season. The Cardiff Blues back-row forward has been a rumoured target for the Wrexham-based club ever since former Wales and British and Irish Lions captain Gareth Thomas made the same move earlier this year. Emanuele Palladino stated that the Crusaders have never made an official offer for the 28-year-old, although he did say that the player might consider a move to rugby league some time in the future. "After much speculation regarding Andy Powell and where he will be playing next season, we wanted to clarify that Andy Powell will not be joining the Crusaders next season," said Palladino, in a statement on www.distinctagency.com. "Andy is a close friend of Gareth Thomas, as everyone knows, and also a big fan of rugby league. "However, there has never been any official offer made for Andy from the Crusaders despite the rumours circulating in the media. "This is not to say that one day Andy will not fulfil his ambition of playing rugby league. "However, Cardiff Blues are aware of the truth behind the rumours, and as things stand today Andy is a Cardiff Blues player."

Headlines

Powell hit the headlines earlier this year when he was withdrawn from Wales' Six Nations squad after being caught driving a golf buggy from the national squad's training base while over the drink-drive limit. He was recalled for last month's game against world champions South Africa in Cardiff and the two-Test New Zealand tour, only to be sidelined after suffering a thigh muscle injury in training. Powell has also been the subject of speculation regarding a possible move to French rugby union club Agen.
