A first-half goal from Stephane Sessegnon was enough to defeat Everton and give Sunderland their first home win in three months, further easing the Black Cats' relegation worries.
Di Canio was happy with the result, but made a point of insisting that his players deserved the credit. He told Sky Sports "Since I have arrived I have found great ability from my players. I can only be happy." David Moyes admitted that the result saw the end of Everton's quest for Champions League football. He told Sky Sports "I don't think we can qualify now.
