Hamburg managed to claim a battling goalless draw at Freiburg despite being reduced to 10 men for most of the match. Hamburg were looking for a third successive Bundesliga win on their travels but their hopes were hit when Paul Scharner was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 35th minute. The visitors reined in their attacking instincts thereafter and seemed content to settle for a share of the spoils, although they were given a let-off in the closing stages when Jan Rosenthal's effort came back off a post. Freiburg will rue their missed opportunity and they remain one place and a point behind Hamburg in 10th. They could have gone ahead as early as the ninth minute but Hamburg keeper Rene Adler made a superb save to keep out Daniel Caligiuri's attempt. Hamburg twice went close on the quarter-hour mark with Freiburg keeper Oliver Baumann fending off Son Heung-Min's shot and Maximilian Beister striking the rebound wide. A downpour threatened to affect the quality of the match before Scharner saw red for collecting his second booking. Hamburg pulled back thereafter and rarely ventured into attack, deciding to avoid conceding a goal. Freiburg pushed forward in the 68th minute and Caligiuri's shot at the right post got past Adler but went just wide. The Hamburg keeper then fended off Max Kruse's blast from just outside the area, while Rosenthal struck a post four minutes from time. The hosts continued to threaten as they went in search of victory but Hamburg would not give in.
