Rovers dominate at Boundary Park

Oldham were left to rue a missed penalty as they fell to just their second defeat at home this term against Bristol Rovers. Top scorer Lee Hughes scuppered the Latics best chance with a tame attempt from the penalty spot subsequently saved by Rovers keeper Steve Phillips. After that early scare Rovers went on to dominate for the remainder of the game, taking the lead just after the break through striker Darryl Duffy. The in-form Scotsman hit a low shot from 14 yards out straight through the dive of on-loan goalkeeper Jan Budtz.

Control

The visitors deservedly doubled their lead from a set-piece, with Stuart Campbell's free-kick causing chaos before Byron Anthony scrambled home his first goal this season. Oldham controlled the first half, but their penalty blunder was followed by a wasted chance when Dean Windass hit the crossbar. Rovers could have increased their tally after taking control, only for Duffy and Rickie Lambert to both miss the target from close range. The Pirates, however, have now won three of their last four away games, while inconsistent Oldham were booed off at the end. John Sheridan's side have drawn a blank in four games out of six, despite having ex-Premier League pair Hughes and Windass up front.
