Canaries end Blues' run

Norwich came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Birmingham at Carrow Road.

Birmingham's 100 per cent record came to an end at Carrow Road

Norwich battled to a 1-1 draw against Birmingham at Carrow Road to end their visitor's 100 per cent start to the season. The result also knocked Alex McLeish's Blues off the top of the Championship table as Norwich came from behind to earn a point. Sebastian Larsson scored against the run of play to give Birmingham the half-time lead, but Darel Russell struck straight after the break to deny McLeish's men a fourth straight league win. Kevin Phillips almost came up with another late winner for the Blues, but Norwich goalkeeper David Marshall pulled off a fine save to keep the veteran at bay. McLeish reinstated his first-choice front pairing of Phillips and James McFadden following the Carling Cup exit at Southampton in midweek, but it was the hosts who dominated the opening half.

Long-range

Phillips was quick to get a sight of goal, whipping in a long-range effort which was held by Marshall in the third minute. But Norwich soon got into their stride and had the best chance of the early exchanges when makeshift forward Russell's shot had to be tipped round the post by Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor. As the half wore on Birmingham came back into the game with Phillips driving a 20-yard shot over the crossbar. And their goal came in the 39th minute after Ryan Bertrand had up-ended McFadden. The Scottish striker floated in a free-kick and Larsson arrived at the near post to send his header past Marshall and into the net for his first goal of the season. But Norwich were level within a minute of the restart, and Arturo Lupoli was at the heart of the move. The former Arsenal frontman ran at the Birmingham defence before squaring the ball to Russell, who made no mistake with a drilled shot past the helpless Taylor.
