Porto suffered a rare home defeat in the Champions League as Dynamo Kiev came away with an even rarer 1-0 victory.

Rare home defeat for Portuguese side, ever rarer win for Ukrainians

A lacklustre Porto side suffered a rare home defeat in the UEFA Champions League as Dynamo Kiev came away with an even rarer 1-0 victory at the Estadio do Dragao. Olexander Aliyev's thunderous first-half free kick did the damage for Yuri Semin's side as they won in the Champions League for the first time in four years. Jesualdo Ferreira's Porto team lacked urgency and attacking vigour from the start and rarely did they test out Dynamo keeper Stanislav Bogush as they suffered a first home defeat in 12 games. In truth the victory could have been a bigger one for the Ukrainians who looked much more dangerous on the break than Porto did in their laboured attack.

      Chance

Ismael Bangoura had the first real chance on five minutes when he led a Kiev break but as he dallied on the ball Jorge Rolando was able to get back with the recovery tackle and clear the danger. From then the home side dominated possession and Lucho Gonzalez struck a post via a touch from Dynamo keeper Bogush on 17 minutes after good work down the left from Lisandro Lopez. Lucho then rounded Bogush five minutes later and the keeper did well not to bring down the Porto frontman, while also driving him too wide to get a shot in on goal. On 27 minutes Aliyev lined up an ambitious free kick from 30 yards but his swerving effort proved too good for Nuno who stepped the wrong way and then merely waved a hand at the ball as it flew into the net beyond him. The goal stunned the home fans who are well used to seeing their side win Champions League games at home, and as they tried to respond Lisandro dragged a shot wide, as did Mariano soon after.
      Second half
It was more of the same in the second half, with Cristian Sapunaru wasting a great chance a minute after the restart when he planted his header wide from Lisandro's expertly delivered free kick. The theme was set with Porto enjoying the possession but failing to test the Kiev keeper, while the Ukrainians looked far more likely to score on the break. Milos Ninkovic blazed over from 12 yards 14 minutes from time as he wasted a glorious chance to kill off Porto. Porto substitute Givanildo Vieira de Souza, wearing the name Hulk on the back of his shirt, found space for a free header from a corner late on but nodded his effort woefully over the bar. The vastly unimpressive Proto attack fizzled out as the clock ticked down and in truth Dynamo were more than comfortable as they saw out the closing stages without incident. Jubilant celebrations followed the final whistle as the Ukrainians clinched the three points to put them in second in the group and in a great position to qualify going into the return fixture with Porto in two weeks.
