Gornell to the rescue for Shrews

New striker Terry Gornell came off the bench to rescue a point for Shrewsbury Town in a 1-1 draw at Burton Albion.

Burton went in front in the 13th minute when the visitors were caught out by Adam Bolder's though ball and Calvin Zola calmly rounded goalkeeper Ben Smith before steering an angled shot into a corner of the net. Full-back Aaron Webster almost doubled Burton's lead with an audacious free-kick from inside his own half that dropped just behind the crossbar with Smith off his line. Marvin Morgan stabbed a shot against the foot of a post as Shrewsbury chased the equaliser and the visitors were further frustrated by two fine saves by Ross Atkins to deny Mark Wright and Matthew Richards near half-time. Burton looked the more dangerous team after the break, with Jacques Maghoma rattling the woodwork and Cleveland Taylor forcing a full-length save from Smith. Shrewsbury rarely threatened and Smith had to get his fingertips to Justin Richards shot to prevent a second Burton goal in the 73rd minute. However, the home defence switched off six minutes from the end and Gornell rose to head home a Shane Cansdell-Sherriff cross.
