West Brom head coach Pepe Mel was satisfied with Nicolas Anelka's performance following a 1-1 draw with Everton in his first match in charge.

The build-up to Mel's first outing at The Hawthorns was overshadowed by property website Zoopla announcing it will end its sponsorship deal with West Brom at the end of the season due to Anelka's 'quenelle' gesture.

The gesture, which Anelka performed after scoring against West Ham last month, has anti-Semitic connotations in France, and is currently being investigated by the Football Association.

Anelka started against Everton before being substituted on 77 minutes and Mel was happy with the former France international's contribution.

"It was very good," Mel told Sky Sports. "He has a good personality. If you work for me, it's very well."

Mel, who was named Steve Clarke's successor earlier this month, also confirmed he is in the market for a new striker following Shane Long's sale to Hull City.

Pepe Mel was pleased with a point from his first match in charge and feels given time, West Brom can improve.

He added: "Shane Long is out. I think the team is very well, but I need one striker more."

Kevin Mirallas had given Everton a first-half lead before Diego Lugano's second-half header earned West Brom a point and Mel was pleased with the start to his reign.

"For me, it was very good," said Mel of his first game. "In the first half, the team was too open, but in the second half we were compact.

"Everton is a team that is very, very strong. Tonight was a difficult match for me and my team, but to have 50 per cent possession of the ball against Everton is very good."
