John Hughes admitted a half-time decision to turn the sprinklers on helped Inverness to a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock.

The Caley Thistle boss asked ground-staff at Caledonian Stadium to dampen the pitch after they struggled to get their passing game going in a goalless opening 45 minutes.

And it worked a treat as goals from Aaron Doran and Greg Tansey ensured they will head into the international break top of the table with four wins and a draw from their five league games.

"With the sun out in the first half it dried up the pitch and slowed the game down," Hughes said.

"But putting the sprinklers on at half-time just sped it up a wee bit and allowed us to have a quick pitch.

"The first half was pretty frustrating. We told the boys to step it up a gear in the second half and we are thankful we got the win.

"It is very pleasing and the start we have made has been absolutely fantastic."

Visiting manager Allan Johnston bemoaned his side's lack of incisiveness with Inverness keeper Dean Brill not having a save to make in anger during the entire 90 minutes.

"I just thought we were a bit sluggish across the park," Johnston said. "We weren't playing the ball like we have been since the start of the season.

"I don't think there were a lot of chances from both teams - certainly not any clear-cut ones.

"We switched off for the first goal and couldn't really do much about the second. It was a wonder strike.

"We didn't pass the ball and create as many chances as we have been doing."
