Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is confident his top summer signings will soon begin to show the ability which earned them moves to St James' Park.

Pardew has brought nine players to the club since the end of last season, although Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles were loaned straight back to Nottingham Forest, but those who have featured have suffered - along with the rest of their new team-mates - through a dreadful start to the season.

Newcastle battled back for a 2-2 draw with Hull City on Saturday to take some pressure off Pardew and they now have some respite from their Premier League troubles when travelling to face Crystal Palace in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday, although he will be without three key players through illness.

Remy Cabella, who signed a six-year deal when joining from Montpellier, put up his best performance in a Newcastle shirt at the weekend and Pardew is convinced the goals will also start to come from former Monaco striker Emmanuel Riviere, who has yet to score despite starting all six of their games.

Pardew said: "I was really pleased with Cabella. He's such an important player for us with Siem de Jong out, and I don't think up until now he has really produced a performance which warrants his tag, the money we have spent.

"But I really felt he showed the character, he showed the quality that really buoyed me, if I am honest, that has buoyed me a little bit going into the next game.

"I feel some sympathy for Manu because he has had to carry the shirt and he's not ready to carry that shirt yet full-time.

"It's a shirt that is heavy and I think he has seen an example from Papiss to take that chance to make that little movement in the box.

"Manu will learn from that, and it gives me the opportunity with Papiss coming back to fitness to rest Manu and for him to understand what it is to play at a big club like this. He's only 24, Riviere, and really and truly, we have had too much responsibility on him."

After taking on Palace in the cup, Newcastle return to Premier League action with an away game at Stoke, live on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.
