York v Crewe preview

Image: Gradi: To hand Phillips a start

Crewe are set to hand Steve Phillips his debut against York in the first round of the FA Cup.

Phillips expected to start in goal for visitors

York City will be without injured defender Djoumin Sangare in the FA Cup first round against Crewe, who are set to hand Steve Phillips his debut. Sangare limped off during the second half of City's 3-1 defeat at Crawley Town after sustaining a groin problem and he could be facing a month on the sidelines. However, David McGurk is expected to be fit after a virus to hand Martin Foyle's non-league troops a boost. On-loan Oxford United player Chris Carruthers is eligible but forward Michael Gash is unavailable due to injury. League Two Crewe have been given the green light to hand Phillips his debut after the goalkeeper joined on a three-month loan from Bristol Rovers this week.

Schumacher doubt

He is expected to start despite Adam Legzdins and Steve Collis still being on the books at Gresty Road. Legzdins will feel hard done by after he kept his second clean sheet of the season in the 4-0 victory at Cheltenham last weekend. However, caretaker boss Dario Gradi wants an experienced head in goal to tighten up a defence that has suffered from the changing of shot-stoppers. Another loan player, Simon Walton, will also get the nod if Steven Schumacher (groin) fails to prove his fitness. Former York striker Clayton Donaldson may have to settle for a place on the bench, with Shaun Miller being preferred to partner leading scorer Calvin Zola.
