Jordan Hugill's second-half goal was enough to see Preston avoid a cup upset in the JPT with a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury.

The striker, a summer signing from Port Vale, netted from close range after 59 minutes as the League One side proved too strong for their opponents from the division below. The Lilywhites dominated the first half with Will Hayhurst proving a real thorn in the visitors' side. The winger crossed for Scott Laird after 19 minutes but the defender could only head straight at Jayson Leutwiler in the Shrewsbury goal. Hayhurst also provided another testing ball five minutes later but Leutwiler was again on hand to prevent Anthony Griffith's deflection from going in. The hosts got the goal they deserved just before the hour mark when a cross from Calum Woods found Hugil unmarked. League Two Shrewsbury improved after the goal with Jean-Louis Akpa Apro forcing a save from Thorsten Stuckmann in the 64th minute but it was not enough to prevent a first defeat of the season for the Shrews.
