Newcastle manager John Carver was critical of his side's "sloppy" defending as they were beaten 3-0 by Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

James McCarthy gave the Toffees the lead after 20 minutes of the Premier League contest and Romelu Lukaku made it 2-0 with a penalty shortly after half-time.

Fabricio Coloccini was then shown a straight red card before Ross Barkley rounded off the win in injury-time.

"Even when it was 11 against 11, we were second best," Carver told Sky Sports.

John Carver says Newcastle were second-best for most of the game and gifted Everton some easy goals

"The first two are sloppy goals, you can't afford to give the opposition a head start and we did that. At 2-0, you are up against it, then you lose your captain and go down to 10 men and you have a mountain to climb.

"Again it was hugely disappointing. We had our best chances when we went down to 10 men, which is a worry. And the loss of Coloccini now for the next three games is a bigger disappointment."

Coloccini was sent off for a reckless challenge on Aaron Lennon minutes after the winger was fouled in the box by Yoan Gouffran.

"At half-time, we were only 1-0 down but to concede a penalty in the manner we did…"
