Sunderland manager Gus Poyet refused to analyse their shambolic thrashing at the hands of Aston Villa immediately after the game.
Poyet’s side conceded all four goals of a 4-0 home defeat in the first half, causing a mass exodus from Sunderland supporters and angry scenes behind the home dugout.
The Uruguayan admitted his side’s performance was “unacceptable” but said he would not dissect what happened in public.
“I think it is better to be short and not talk too much,” he told Sky Sports. “I’ve got an idea of what went wrong but now is not the moment to talk about that. I don’t think it’s the right time to talk about individual players in particular.
“It is a very difficult day. It is difficult to understand and accept. It shouldn’t be acceptable and I am very disappointed. But we need to analyse it and calm down and see things in a different way.”
Sunderland are in deep relegation trouble, sitting just a points above the drop zone, and they have won just two of their last 14 Premier League games.
Poyet insists he will not hide from angry supporters but admitted he was not expecting the club to be in such trouble at this stage of the season.
“I said it a few weeks ago: I’m not the type of person to pick and choose things when it goes for or against me," he said. "I’m responsible so I totally understand the anger and I’m going to take it.
“I said that when things were going good and I’m not going to change now. There are too many hypocrites in football now. They go where the wind is going and change their beliefs, but I don’t.
“First I am going to analyse the game. There are certain games where there is not too much to talk about but today deserves more than normal attention and after that we can start moving forward.
“I was not expecting to be talking about relegation now. I was expecting much better and plenty of points but we don’t have anyone to blame apart from ourselves and we all need to accept that.”
