Newcastle skipper Fabricio Coloccini insists he has no desire to become the club’s new manager ahead of Alan Pardew's expected departure.

The 33-year-old Argentina international was the bookmakers' early favourite when news of Crystal Palace's approach for Pardew emerged, although sources on Tyneside were swift to dismiss the speculation.

But Coloccini has reiterated his intention to concentrate on his playing career, having first been linked with the post last year when Pardew found himself under intense scrutiny.

Speaking after Newcastle's 3-3 draw with Burnley on New Year’s Day, he said: "I am a football player now and I want to play for a few years more. I want to enjoy being on the pitch. It's not for now."

Assistant manager John Carver took charge of the team with Pardew in Birmingham where he watched Palace's goalless draw at Aston Villa.

And Coloccini admitted that while it had been a tough few days for the players and staff at the club, Carver’s capabilities as a manager could see him take up the role on a permanent basis.

"It is a difficult situation, but John Carver is with us. He has the experience to take the job,” he added.

"Of course it’s difficult, but it has not affected the team. When you go on the field, you have to leave all the problems behind you."
