Robin van Persie says he is finally feeling fully fit after a difficult start to the season with Manchester United.

The Dutchman helped the Netherlands reach the semi-finals of the World Cup over the summer, but in an interview with Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves, he admits he has struggled for form and fitness in the opening weeks of the domestic season under new manager Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United won just three of their opening 10 Premier League matches and Van Persie scored three goals in that period, but he returned to the goal trail with a brace against Southampton on Monday night.

And ahead of the Super Sunday showdown with Liverpool at Old Trafford, he believes he has finally recovered from a busy summer in Brazil.

He said: “I’ve played five tournaments now – three European Championships and two World Cups – and based on those tournaments and the period after, it’s always been difficult to get straight back into the flow and into form.

“It’s tough. You are trying absolutely everything, but it’s not coming off. You don’t have that kind of luck you normally have. It was a tough start for me and the team“
