It has been revealed that Roy Hodgson will name his preliminary squad on 12th May, a day after the 2013/14 Premier League season comes to a close. Who, though, will earn a seat on the plane to South America and be charged with the task of trying to end England's 48-year wait for global glory? Will youngsters such as Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw make the grade? Will the old guard of Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick be given the nod? What formation will Hodgson play and who best suits that system? All questions which need to be answered over the coming weeks. If you would like to have a go at whittling the cream of the English crop down to 23 lucky individuals, you can do so by casting your vote in our Sky Sports England Squad Selector. Former Leeds United and Manchester City full-back Mills - who was capped on 19 occasions by his country - has had his say, and this is who he plumped for.

Goalkeepers x3

My England squad would be, Joe Hart in goal - fantastic goalkeeper and without a shadow of a doubt England's number one. Backed up by (Ben) Foster, again an exceptional goalkeeper who has experience. Then I'd go with Jack Butland. I think it would be fantastic for him to get that extra experience of being involved in an international squad. There would be an argument for (John) Ruddy, but how often do you see the third keeper used? It's very rare, so I think the experience for him would be absolutely vital.

Defenders x8

At the back, I would go for Leighton Baines as number one - absolutely exceptional so far this season - backed up by Ashley Cole. I still think Ashley Cole has been superb - great player. People argue that he hasn't played a lot, and the argument obviously is for Luke Shaw, but look at performances against Atletico Madrid in the first leg - big game, big pressure - against Liverpool - huge game, massive pressure - and he was ready. That's why Ashley Cole would be my back-up. Gary Cahill I think speaks for himself at centre-back - in the team of the year and an exceptional player. As back-up to him, I would have Phil Jones in there - a utility player who can play in a number of positions if needed. Partnering him, hoping he is going to be fit, would be Phil Jagielka. Obviously he has missed a few games, but they have started to form a really good partnership this season. Then, to back-up Jagielka, (Chris) Smalling, again who can possibly play at right-back if needed. The two right-backs, Glen Johnson, exceptional this season in the Liverpool team going forward. He's really cemented his place as England's number one. I'd back him up with Kyle Walker - although he's had one or two indifferent performances of late, you do have options with Smalling and Jones to play at right-back if absolutely necessary.

Midfielders x9

Holding midfield - Steven Gerrard, England captain and has been absolutely superb for Liverpool this season. Enough said. I'd play Jordan Henderson alongside him, formed a great partnership for Liverpool and I think they can continue that. They understand each other, they know each other's positions and they can play off each other. The two back-up midfielders in that position, I would go with James Milner and Michael Carrick. James Milner - a fantastic professional, can play in any position on the pitch and will do a fantastic job for you. Michael Carrick, as we know, will keep hold of the ball and that will be absolutely vital, especially in the heat of Manaus in the early games. Then we move to a three in front of those. Adam Lallana, he has been fantastic this season and is another player who is technically very good, will keep the ball and will work very hard. He's in my starting XI. I would then have Wayne Rooney in the number 10 role. I don't think we need to say too much about Wayne, a great footballer. And then (Raheem) Sterling on the right-hand side of the three. Another player who has done superbly well this season, has got pace - and that's the most important thing, he can unlock defences, he can change the game for you. I back those players up with Ross Barkley, as a direct replacement for Wayne Rooney who can always be pushed a bit further forward. Barkley has that bit of spark, something different, and of course we don't have Jack Wilshere to pick from. Out on the right, I'd go with (Alex) Oxlade-Chamberlain, a player who can play in two or three different positions in that midfield area. He's superb. That just leaves me with one space, and I go with Frank Lampard. I think he has been exceptional.

Strikers x3

Up front, you've got Daniel Sturridge, who again I think has been absolutely exceptional this season. Okay, maybe he's gone off the boil a little bit in recent weeks, but in big games he will come to the fore. (Danny) Welbeck up front as well, again he can play on the left-hand side or take the place of Sturridge if necessary. There would possibly be an argument for Rickie Lambert, but you have got Rooney, you've got Welbeck, you've got Sturridge up front. For me, Frank Lampard just shades my final pick, and that's because of his performances in recent games. I know Lambert, given the opportunity, might just get you a goal, but I think Lampard can still make those bursts from midfield and make an impact. I don't think Andy Carroll has done enough, for me he hasn't shown how fit he is. It's an option. You have to believe in your system, you have to believe in the way you play and I believe that if you go 4-2-3-1, you can play Sturridge up top, Welbeck up top, you can play Rooney, you could even play Sterling up top. You've got options - Lallana, Rooney, Barkley, Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson can go forward, Milner can push forward on one side, you've got options to change things around. You've got three quality centre-forwards who are likely to get you a goal.

Summary

I look at that and it's the most rounded, solid squad. The one that people might disagree with, they might leave Frank Lampard out for Rickie Lambert, but apart from that I look at that as a well-balanced squad. Defensively we are a little bit weak in one or two positions and there would be another argument to possibly leave Smalling behind or Walker behind, because people can fill in in those areas, and maybe take Lambert as well. That might be one option as we get towards the last couple of games that I would seriously look at. Check out who our other Sky Sports pundits picked and select your own squad here
