Port Vale defender John McCombe says the current side have what it takes to secure automatic promotion.

Defender optimistic Vale can finish in top three

Port Vale defender John McCombe insists the current side have what it takes to secure automatic promotion to League One. The Valiants' promotion credentials took a major blow on Saturday, as Jim Gannon's men suffered a 2-1 home defeat to play-off chasing Oxford United. However, with only Gillingham picking up three points out of the top seven clubs, Vale remain just five points adrift of the automatic promotion places, with a game in hand. McCombe, who played a major role in Hereford United's rise from the bottom tier in 2008, has vowed to call on his own experience. The defender revealed that if the Valiants can build some momentum, there will be no stopping them in their pursuit of League One football.

Working hard

He told the club's official website: "Saturday was obviously disappointing, when you look at the table; we could have been up to fourth and two points behind Wycombe Wanderers, with a game in hand. "But on the other hand, it could have been a lot worse for us. If the teams above us had won, we would have been left further adrift. "We have got to go to Accrington on Saturday and try and get something from the game, which won't be easy. Then we have got those three home games in a row at Vale Park. "Our home form has been good throughout the season, but we have let it slip a little bit of late. Hopefully, with those big three games coming up, we can get our home form back on track and pick up quite a few points. "Whoever puts a good run together from now until the end of the season is going to get in those promotion places, and I can't see any reason why that shouldn't be us. "We have just got to keep working hard and put Saturday behind us, if we make the play-offs that is still good, but we are all still aiming at those top three positions."
