McCarthy axe not caused by row

A rift with club owner Steve Morgan was not the reason for Mick McCarthy's dismissal, according to Jez Moxey.

Morgan returning from holiday to begin search for new boss

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has played down suggestions a rift in the working relationship with club owner Steve Morgan was the reason for Mick McCarthy's sacking. McCarthy made it clear he was unhappy Morgan vented his feelings towards the players in the dressing room in the aftermath of January's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Molineux. And it has been suggested the incident created an unbridgeable gap between the two men which on Monday led to an end to their almost six-year association. But when asked if that had any bearing on McCarthy's sacking just 12 days later, Moxey said: "Honestly, no. Mick wasn't happy with it and he said so. "It's not football protocol for a chairman or an owner to go into the dressing room. That's why you'll never find me there.

Contenders

"But you know what - he's the owner and he can do what he wants. If an owner who is putting his money in wants to do it, he can go and do what he wants. "We had a staff meeting the following day where I believe we cleared the air and Mick and Steve had the same relationship they had before he (Morgan) went into the dressing room." Morgan on Wednesday returns from a skiing holiday to start the search for McCarthy's successor, with Alan Curbishley remaining the favourite with the bookmakers. He has already indicated his willingness to talk to Morgan if he receives the call. Steve Bruce and Neil Warnock are also among the potential contenders who have made it known they are interested after losing their jobs at Sunderland and QPR earlier this season.
