England boss will name Euros squad on May 16th

New England boss Roy Hodgson will name his squad for the European Championship next Wednesday - two weeks ahead of schedule. The 23-man squad will be announced at 1pm on May 16th with Hodgson facing the media later that afternoon to explain his selections. Hodgson could have opted to delay naming his squad until the UEFA deadline of May 29th, with caretaker boss Stuart Pearce planning to name only a provisional squad prior to this. But Hodgson is keen to let his players know well in advance of the training camp in Spain that will precede a friendly against Norway in Oslo on May 26th. It means the 64-year-old has some huge issues to address over the next week with several major decisions needing to be made. Hodgson is yet to address the difficult relationship between John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, with the former facing charges of racial abuse against the latter's brother, Anton. There is also the matter of the England captaincy in addition to tactical decisions in terms of how to cover the loss of Wayne Rooney through suspension for the first two group games.

Alterations

Hodgson does have several days after the Norway game in which to make alterations before submitting a final list to UEFA ahead of a friendly against Belgium at Wembley on June 2nd. The players will then be given two days off before England travel to their Poland base to prepare for their first match at the European Championships, against France on June 11th. Hodgson has had little time to prepare for the tournament, having only been appointed as Fabio Capello's successor at the beginning of this month. He will take charge of West Brom in their final Premier League game of the season against Arsenal on Sunday before turning his full attention to the business of selecting the England squad.
