Hatters bounce back, Shrimpers win

Luton showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in League Two after their 1-0 win at Carlisle, while Southend beat Accrington 1-0.

Despite losing 30-goal striker Andre Gray over the summer, the Hatters got off to a fine start thanks to Mark Cullen's 30th-minute strike and some solid defending in front of a healthy crowd of 6,766 at Brunton Park. Cheltenham sprang a surprise when securing a 1-0 win over promotion favourites Bury at Gigg Lane, with Joe Hanks hitting the back of the net just before half-time against the big-spending Shakers. Portsmouth are another team expected to be up at the right end of the table and they began with a point at Exeter after Jed Wallace struck in the 74th minute to cancel out a first-half opener from Tom Nichols. Former Hibernian striker James Collins showed his class with a double strike for Shrewsbury, but that brace was only enough to earn a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at AFC Wimbledon, with Matt Tubbs and Sean Rigg replying for the Dons in between. Lee Barnard's late penalty proved enough to give Southend a 1-0 triumph at Accrington, while Josh Coulson also scored the only goal of the game as Cambridge beat Plymouth by the same scoreline at Abbey Stadium, where the attendance topped 6,000. Morecambe ran out emphatic 3-0 victors at Dagenham, with Kevin Ellison opening the scoring just after half-time before Padraig Amond struck from the penalty spot and Jack Redshaw put the icing on the cake five minutes into stoppage time. Peter Murphy and Paris Cowan-Hall hit the back of the net in a four-minute blitz just before the interval as Wycombe won 2-0 at Newport, while James Rowe struck deep into stoppage time to earn a point for Tranmere at Prenton Park in a 1-1 draw with York, with Keith Lowe having put the Minstermen ahead. The other three opening fixtures all ended in 1-0 wins, with Kaid Mohamed giving Northampton all three points at home to Mansfield, Lucas Akins helping Burton to oblige at Oxford and Chris Whelpdale's strike for Stevenage proving enough to see off Hartlepool.
