Birmingham have been given permission to talk to Burton manager Gary Rowett about their vacant position, according to Sky sources.

The Championship club sacked Lee Clark on Monday after a run of 11 points from their first 12 league games and have already seen an approach for Karl Robinson rejected by MK Dons.

Rowett spent two seasons at St Andrew's as a player and last season led Burton to the League Two play-off final.

Another name on Birmingham's shortlist is Mike Phelan, the former Manchester United assistant manager who has been out of work since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.
