Transfer guide

The manager may have changed at Goodison Park, but one suspects that the ethos will not. Roberto Martinez will have money to spend on his squad, but only if high-profile players are again sold. All of which make the Spaniard's 'promise' of Champions League football rather ambitious.

We break down who Everton should be signing and weigh up how much cash might be in the transfer kitty.

What's been said: "There are six (Premier League) teams who are competing at a different financial level to the others. What is true is not always you need the money to achieve your aims" - Roberto Martinez. The budget: Four years of a negative net spend would suggest the same again. What's needed: David Moyes admitted his squad was getting older without taking any real responsibility but that's the problem Roberto Martinez will inherit at Everton, where five of the current first-choice XI are over 30. He can add some youth, pace and a little more excitement further up the pitch simply by putting in a call to his old friend Dave Whelan and asking for Callum McManaman, Arouna Kone and James McCarthy (the sale of Marouane Fellaini for £24m will pay for that little lot and still leave a little pile of change) but it's in defence that Martinez faces his biggest task. Sylvain Distin (35) and Phil Jagielka (30) are desperately in need of some younger competition, especially with Johnny Heitinga (29) desperate to play some football elsewhere. Buying defenders has never really been Martinez's forte so Everton fans had better hope that he's been keeping a few sneaky aces under his hat in that department. He may also wonder whether a £15m-rated 28-year-old left-back is really worth more than the £15m he would generate. Evolution or revolution? How brave are you feeling, Roberto? Ideal signing: Everton's best option may well be for Martinez to raid his former club for their best talent, certainly an available option following Wigan's relegation. Callum McManaman, Arouna Kone and Jordi Gomez are all options, but James McCArthy would be the most impressive recruit. However, with Everton's scoring problems, Kone seems the most natural fit. Sky Bet: Everton have unsurprisingly been backed to sign various Wigan players after hiring Roberto Martinez. The Toffees are currently favourites to sign Callum McManaman and Franco Di Santo, while they follow Tottenham in the betting to land James McCarthy's services. The Goodison Park outfit have also been backed to land Aiden McGeady from Spartak Moscow, while Arouna Kone (2/1), Danny Rose (6/1), and Demba Ba (7/1) are also considered as possible targets. However, the majority of the money has been on who will be leaving Goodison Park this summer, with Leighton Baines odds-on to follow David Moyes to Manchester United, while Arsenal (11/10), United (6/4) and Chelsea (8/1) have all been backed to sign Marouane Fellaini.
