Tommy Lee - Chesterfield
Only 16 of the 72 goalkeepers to line-up for kick-off on the opening weekend of Football League action managed to see their side keep a clean sheet and few could say they did more than Chesterfield keeper Tommy Lee. The former Manchester United man had his work cut out as Bury enjoyed the better of the chances against the Spireites at Gigg Lane but Lee helped his side to a 2-0 victory. The 27-year-old saved well from Shaun Harrad at his near post before turning away a Nathan Cameron volley to earn his shut-out.
Brian Wilson - Colchester
Colchester captain Brian Wilson produced an accomplished performance to help his side pick up an impressive 1-0 win at Gillingham. Not only did the 30-year-old defender play his part in the team's clean sheet - coming up with a last-ditch challenge to deny Cody McDonald - but he offered a threat going forward too. His teasing first-half free-kick almost caught out opposition goalkeeper Stuart Nelson and Wilson then almost found the breakthrough with a snap-shot that was saved at the second attempt. Ultimately, Andy Bond's winner ensured it was three points for the U's.
Alex Baptiste - Bolton
The summer signing from Blackpool lined up in the full-back slot for new club Bolton in their weekend 1-1 draw at Burnley but Alex Baptiste's ability as a utility man sees him take the central role in our team. There was no clean sheet for the 27-year-old Englishman but he did deliver a solid performance to impress the travelling support. A far post clearance from the dangerous Kieran Trippier was perhaps the pick as Baptiste showcased his dependability under pressure.
Harry Worley - Newport
"At least I'll know the answer to the trivia question of who scored Newport's first goal back in the Football League," said Harry Worley after Newport's spectacular 4-1 win over Accrington Stanley upon their return to the big time. The answer, of course, is Worley himself after the former Chelsea trainee volleyed home midway through the first-half to set the Welsh side on their way. He admitted afterwards: "I'm buzzing but if I'd thought about what the goal meant I'd have blazed it over the bar."
Chris Cohen - Nottingham Forest
Chris Cohen may feel more comfortable in a midfield role but the 26-year-old Nottingham Forest player delivered a classy performance from left-back as the Reds got off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory at home to Huddersfield on Saturday. Cohen contributed to the clean sheet but had a more significant role to play at the other end as his driving run set up Henri Lansbury for the only goal of the game. Forest boss Billy Davies said: "It was an inspired performance by Chris Cohen, it was a tremendous run and it was a terrific performance. He leads by an example and is a fantastic captain."
Jose Baxter - Oldham
Former Everton prodigy Jose Baxter was tipped for stardom at one point, but for now the 21-year-old attacking midfielder will settle for starring roles at Stevenage. The Oldham man entertained the away support among the 3,009 crowd with two goals as the Latics ran out 4-3 winners in a sensational game at Broadhall Way. Baxter had put Oldham ahead midway through the second half and when Cristian Montano doubled the lead it looked to be all over. But two Stevenage goals brought the home side level, only for Baxter to seal the win with a nerveless penalty late on.
Ed Upson - Yeovil
If you believe the bookmakers then Yeovil were expected to be outclassed this season as they embark on a maiden Championship campaign. Nobody told Ed Upson as the Glovers midfield was the best player on the park in Saturday's 1-0 victory in the Lions' Den of Millwall. The 23-year-old former Ipswich trainee had already put in a fine display but capped it with the late winner to secure all three points. "I wanted to strike it first time but, with the spin, it could have gone anywhere and I found myself with time to control it and take a shot," admitted Upson afterwards.
Danny Drinkwater - Leicester
It didn't look like being Danny Drinkwater's day at Middlesbrough on Saturday with his team a goal down at the interval and the Foxes midfielder failing to make an impression. But the Leicester man sparked a come-from-behind 2-1 win when he beat Jason Steele from 25 yards to equalise on the hour mark. The winner arrived soon after with Drinkwater seizing control of the contest and the 23-year-old earns his place in this team for the manner in which he bossed the game thereafter.
Junior Hoilett - QPR
Queens Park Rangers are hot favourites to storm to the Championship title this season and with talent such as Junior Hoilett in their midst it can be of little surprise. The Canadian looked a constant menace on Saturday as the Hoops came from behind to beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Loftus Road and played a key role in the equaliser. Hoilett saw his shot turned in by Nedum Onuoha to spark the turnaround and after Andy Johnson netted the winner shortly afterwards, the winger deservedly ran out on the winning side.
Ross McCormack - Leeds
New boy Luke Murphy took the plaudits at Elland Road for his last-minute goal that gave Leeds a 2-1 victory over Brighton in front of more than 33,000 fans but nobody did more than Ross McCormack to claim the points. The Scotland international netted an early equaliser to change the course of the game and as well as taking that opportunity superbly he also maintained his work-rate throughout to ensure it was a fraught afternoon for the Brighton back-line.
Leon Best - Blackburn
After a year-long wait for his first Blackburn goal, Leon Best delivered in dramatic fashion as his last-gasp scissor-kick earned Rovers a deserved point in their 1-1 draw away to Derby on Sunday. By that point, Best had already hit the woodwork twice with an all-action display coming off the bench as he showed everyone what a handful he can be when fit. Sadly, the Republic of Ireland international has not enjoyed that luxury much lately having had to battle back from a cruciate knee ligament injury that wrecked his season last time out. Judging by the way he rushed over to celebrate with the medical staff, Best is determined to make the most of this new lease of footballing life.
