Portugal 2 England 2 (AET), Euro 2004 quarter-final

Having missed out on the squads for Euro 2000 and the World Cup two years later, Lampard made the most of his call-up for his first major championships. He scored against France and Croatia in the group stage, before netting an extra-time leveller against hosts Portugal in the quarter-finals. England went on to lose on penalties but Lampard's performances were recognised by UEFA, and he was included him in its team of the tournament.

England 2 Poland 1, 2006 World Cup qualifying

Named England player of the year by fans in 2004, he won the same accolade the following year thanks to his performances in World Cup qualifying. In a tight group, Lampard's winner against Poland secured a place at the finals in Germany.

England 3 Estonia 0, Euro 2008 qualifying

The man voted player of the year in successive years soon became the focal point of negative attention, when he was booed by some England fans after coming off the bench due to the perception he failed to produce his best form with England. "For me he's one of the best players in the world and doesn't deserve it," team-mate Joe Cole said at the time.

Germany 4 England 1, World Cup 2010

Having just seen Matthew Upson pull one back, Lampard thought he had levelled with a superb lofted finish over Manuel Neuer. The ball clearly crossed the line but no goal was awarded, robbing England of hope of a comeback. Germany went onto triumph 4-1 and the incident played a major part in the introduction of goal-line technology.

England 2 Brazil 1, 2013 friendly

At a time when he his Chelsea future was up in the air, Lampard showed he still had it with an exquisite winner against Brazil. Coming off the bench at half-time, his curled effort from the edge of the area proved the difference as England beat the South Americans for the first time in 23 years.
