Russia’s football chiefs are considering the future of head coach Fabio Capello in the wake of their home defeat to Austria in their European Qualifier.

The loss, Russia’s first at home in five years, leaves them third in Group G, eight points behind leaders Austria and four points behind Sweden.

Former England boss Capello has coached Russia since 2012 and was awarded a four-year contract extension last year to lead Russia through to their home World Cup in 2018.

But following a string of poor results, acting Russian Football Union president Nikita Simonyan has said they "will discuss" whether to remove Capello.

Russia have won just two of their last 10 competitive games, with one of those victories coming against minnows Liechtenstein and the other awarded by default when a match against Montenegro was abandoned due to crowd trouble.

Their next qualification game comes at home to Sweden in September, although it remains to be seen whether Capello will still be in charge.
