And the 19-year-old could make his first appearance for his new team on Saturday, when the Owls lock horns with Derby at Hillsborough.
Wednesday are currently 18th in the Championship table, four points clear of the drop zone, and will be hoping Wickham can boost their bid for survival during his relatively short loan stint.
Sunderland signed Wickham from Ipswich for £8.1m in the summer of 2011 and, while he has yet to secure a regular first team place, he has appeared to be getting to grips with the top flight in recent months.
However, Sunderland only have three games between now and Wickham's scheduled return date and, with Danny Graham having arrived on transfer deadline day from Swansea, boss Martin O'Neill has decided he can afford to farm out the youngster.
O'Neill said: "Now that he has good confidence, maybe getting four or five matches in that month-long period in the Championship would be good news all round, if he stays clear of injury.
"My slight concern is that something happens to us - but it is three games, as opposed to a host of matches in the 28-day period."
Wickham has been capped by England at U16, U17, U19 and U21 level, scoring the winner in the final when the U17 side beat Spain to win the European Championship in 2010.
