French defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has insisted that he is focused on Montpellier this season despite having to forgo the chance to join AC Milan in the summer.
The 23-year-old was on the radar of the Italian giants as well as Ligue 1 club Lille in the summer, but eventually had to remain with the French champions.
Yanga-Mbiwa's current contract with Montpellier runs out at the end of the season and he is keen to perform to his best for the next seven or so months.
"Last summer's interest from AC Milan? I already knew about the situation," he told France Football.
"Last year, Lille wanted me and it was difficult for me to face the fact that I had to stay at Montpellier. But now I believe that if I play well, then the clubs will come back.
"I am not mad that I did not leave. I remained focused, had some difficult periods and even some doubts, but that is logical. We will see what will happen in the coming months.
"I had just a few meetings with the Montpellier to see how we would manage it [about extending my contract].
"I don't want to neglect the club where I was educated. We will try to work things out properly."
