Sky Sports understands Manchester City have been unable to agree a fee with Swansea City to sign winger Scott Sinclair.
City had been expected to finalise a reported £6.2million deal for Sinclair on Tuesday, but it now appears that the transfer has fallen through.
Sinclair, who is in the final year of his contract at the Liberty Stadium, had been lined up to replace the departed Adam Johnson at the Premier League champions.
However, the anticipated transfer is now on hold after the two clubs failed to agree terms, with Roberto Mancini enduring further frustration in his efforts to improve his squad.
Mancini has so far only signed England midfielder Jack Rodwell from Everton and is anxious to bring in more fresh faces before Friday's transfer deadline.
He must now decide whether to pursue alternative targets, while the impasse could impact on Swansea's own efforts to secure new signings.
The Swans had been considering moves for Middlesbrough attacker Marvin Emnes and Valencia's Pablo Hernandez to replace Sinclair, who was not involved in the 3-0 win over West Ham United at the weekend.
Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins had been critical of City's handling of their pursuit of Sinclair and suggested the title holders had allowed the situation to drag on.
