Argentine forward joins Villarreal's survival bid

Villarreal have confirmed that they beat the transfer deadline to land Alejandro Martinuccio on a six-month loan deal. The Argentine forward has moved to Spain from Fluminense and will see out the season at El Madrigal. The 24-year-old will join up with his new team-mates for the first time on Thursday, giving him chance to find his feet before being thrust into a Primera Liga basement battle. In a statement, Villarreal said: "Villarreal CF and Fluminense FC have reached a transfer agreement for the Argentinian forward Alejandro Martinuccio, who will be a part of the Submarine first team until the end of the current season." Brazilian club Fluminense, in their own statement, said the deal contained an option for Villarreal to buy Martinuccio in the summer. Martinuccio struggled for form following his move from Uruguayans Penarol to Fluminense last year, and managed just one goal in 15 appearances. He will be hoping to better that record in Spain and help Villarreal to clamber out of the drop zone and away from relegation danger.
