Henry Winter tells the Sunday Supplement the Ferdinand should explain their boycott

Rio and Anton Ferdinand must explain their grievances against the way football tackles racism and take a central role in combatting the issue, according to The Telegraph's Henry Winter.

The Sun's Shaun Custis commended the Ferdinands for their statement last week but agreed that they must go further and disclose the full details of their objections to the Kick It Out campaign. However he wonders whether they will ever do so as they, along with John Terry, appear to be reticent about speaking out.

Statement

"I thought the statement put out by the Ferdinands was a good one," he said. "It sort of put across their grievances but also understanding that they had to draw a line under it because we could not go on like this. "I would still like Rio or Anton to really come out, preferably in The Sun, saying what the whole problem is. We know the rift with Terry and Cole but the problem with Kick It Out..? Properly explain it because I still don't feel that we really got to the numb of that. "I think a lot of people in the country were surprised at the reaction of black footballers against Kick It Out. They do as much as they can do properly; it seems to me, to kick racism out of the game. "They are a small department, they have done some great work and in England we seem to work very hard against racism.
On the record
"So to have this big reaction and for them to say it is not good enough and to not wear the T-shirt, I think it would be helpful if they actually went on the record and said exactly what it is. "I would like to see it happen but I don't know if we will ever get to that point now because they (the Ferdinands) said in their statement that is it and they want to move on. "Equally is John Terry ever going to talk about his situation? I don't think he wants to either."
