Asian Football Confederation general secretary Alex Soosay, who had been suspended over cover-up claims dating back to the reign of Mohammed bin Hammam, has resigned with immediate effect.

Soosay was suspended last month after Malaysian media reported that he asked an AFC official to "tamper or hide" documents from a probe.

PricewaterhouseCoopers conducted an audit of the AFC in 2012 following Bin Hammam's life-time ban by world governing body FIFA for ethics breaches.

"The Asian Football Confederation would like to thank Dato' Alex Soosay for his commitment to Asian football during his extensive 20-year-long career at the AFC and wishes him all the best for his future career," the AFC said in a statement.

Soosay's deputy Windsor John would take over his role until the appointment of a new general secretary, the AFC said.

The AFC did not say if the outcome of their investigation into Soosay would be made public.
